Fountain Hills, AZ Area Guide“Come for a day; stay for a lifetime.” That’s the motto of Fountain Hills and the people who live here mean it! A suburb about thirty miles from downtown Phoenix, with beautiful, scenic mountains surrounding it, the small town is a world to itself. But don’t let that fool you. Just because it’s cozy doesn’t mean there’s nothing going on. Less than thirty miles away is Phoenix, and the Sky Harbor Airport is waiting, knowing you’ll be back, ready to come home to Fountain Hills.
Rich with the culture of the west, it’s a planned city that caters to the needs of its community. The first thing you’ll notice when you come into Fountain Hills is the fountain. Turned on for the first time in 1970, the fountain is the fourth largest in the world and a spectacular sight to behold. Once you’ve seen the water shoot up, sometimes to 360-560 feet out over the lake, you can never forget it! It runs on the hour for 15 minutes from 9:00 a.m. - 9:00 pm. Fountain Hills started small as most planned communities do, and residents develop a close knit bond with their neighbors as each new person moves in. The expression, “I never met a stranger,” never holds more true than it does here. Once you’ve gotten past staring at the fountain’s majestic spray, though, time to start looking around the area! A local realtor can help you choose the perfect home for your lifestyle, helping you mesh your personal taste with a floor plan and décor that suits your taste. If you decide you want to build from the ground up, lots are available and waiting to break ground. After you’ve made your choice, it’s just a matter of putting the finishing touches on the deal! Now, your new home is chosen, you’ve picked out your colors and it’s time to explore and see what your beautiful new community has waiting for you. With lots of things to see and do, you’re going to be a little busy for a while! Of course, one of your first priorities are schools, and family oriented Fountain Hills has just the thing. Day cares abound, along with pre schools that available and close by, no matter where you are in town. All the public schools have a varied curriculum and consistent ratings of seven and above make education a key component to the enjoyment of the community. Whether they’re just starting out in kindergarten or about to finish high school and head off to college, Fountain Hills is preparing its youth for the future. Moving into a new community always presents a unique situation. Once you’ve found the perfect market, with Fountain Hills, you’ll be wondering what to do first. Surrounded by the beautiful desert and with Fort McDowell close by, a good start might be visiting the Grand Canyon. If you’ve never been, you’ll be amazed. Tours run daily and you can choose to see one of nature’s most majestic creations from the ground or the air, or even walk across it from the sky! A favorite of locals and tourists, a glass bridge is built 4,000 feet up across a gorge of the Grand Canyon and the view is spectacular! No matter which way you look, there’s a breathtaking view of the sky, the Colorado River or the canyon itself. If you don’t like heights, but love camping, McDowell National Park or McDowell National Preserve, with its lush grounds and mountain paths could be for you. Hiking your way up into the hills, you can see the beauty of Mother Nature and often spot the local wildlife while on your way to settle into one of the 76 camp sites. As you drive through your new neighborhood, be sure to check out Four Peaks, a Fountain Hilld Landmark located on the far side of Tonto Basin and Roosevelt Lake. Famous for world class amethyst that has ended up in jewelry for the crowned heads of Europe, Four Peaks was discovered by the Spanish and while now closed to the public, has scenic trails around it, open the hikers and bikers and sightseers. Another legend worth checking out is the Superstition Mountains, long rumored to be the home to the “Lost Dutchman Mine.” In spite of everyone’s inability to find it, hikers and campers still love it out there, where winter camping is fun. But even if you’re not a camper or a hiker, there are activities and annual events to be found in Fountain Hills, starting in January. Before the first month is half way over, Elegance of Fountain Hills Antique Show is in full swing for two days and the Community Center followed by the Silver Car Auction and ending with their famous Pony Express Day. On that day, recreating what Pony Express riders did on a daily basis, the rider gallops up to the post office to start up the festivities. Free recreation, food, music and drink are all folded in to celebrate a part of American history that will always be a legend distinctly of the West. In November, celebrate with the Indians their victory over the threatened destruction of Fort McDowell by the creation of the Orme dam, and enjoy the only Thanksgiving Day Parade in the state of Arizona. Once the Thanksgiving Day holiday is past, don’t dare miss Strolling the Glow on the Avenue of Fountains. Over 60,000 lights twinkle in the median and Santa makes an early appearance for kids, while adults are welcomed into the open shops. Exclusive homes, great schools and beautiful weather wait for you in Fountain Hills, all you have to do is pack! Fountain Hills is a small, scenic desert community located east of Scottsdale and about 30 minutes from Sky Harbor International Airport. The town is surrounded by mountains with sweeping mountain views including Four Peaks, the Superstition Mountains and the McDowell Mountains, and boasts a natural desert landscape. The Fountain Hills area is wreathed by majestic mountains, draped in the unique vegetation of the Sonoran Desert and blessed with panoramic views. The saguaro-studded landscape provides a scenic venue for a wide range of outdoor activities such as golfing, hiking, biking, bird watching and boating.
